Royal College of Music: Endowment Readiness Review

12 October 2026
Royal College of Music Endowment

“Philanthropy Company’s work with the RCM has provided a valuable and practical roadmap to maximise the opportunities now afforded to the College for future growth of its endowment fund. Gordon has been a pleasure to work with, always responsive to our needs and providing clear guidance to both our executive and board.”

James Williams, RCM Director

Challenge

The Royal College of Music (RCM) engaged Philanthropy Company to undertake an independent review of its endowment fundraising readiness as it considered the role endowment might play within future campaign planning.

Response

Rather than beginning with fundraising tactics, we conducted a comprehensive assessment of the College’s endowment governance, investment arrangements, fundraising propositions and stewardship processes. Through stakeholder interviews and document review, we examined the alignment between Finance and Development, assessed the strength of the existing endowment structure, and identified opportunities to enhance donor messaging, create new endowment propositions, and strengthen organisational confidence in discussing endowment giving.

Beyond identifying the many strengths of RCM’s operation, we provided a practical action plan covering endowed posts, legacy fundraising, matching funds, stewardship, international fundraising and donor-facing materials.

Impact

The project gave senior leadership a clear roadmap for future endowment growth and highlighted how strong governance, clear donor communications and effective stewardship can continue to help build long-term financial resilience. The work now provides a robust platform from which the College can develop future fundraising activity and pursue transformational support for generations of musicians to come.
