Supporting Durham University with Campaign Planning

Challenge
Durham University is preparing a comprehensive campaign to mark its 200th anniversary—a milestone rooted in a legacy of philanthropy. The University was founded through a transformative act of giving, when Bishop Van Mildert donated Durham Castle and Palace Green Library to establish a new centre of learning. Over the centuries, Durham has continued to embrace philanthropy, delivering successful campaigns for major capital projects and scholarship initiatives, including the restoration of Palace Green Library and its 175th anniversary celebrations. Most recently, the University recorded its largest philanthropic gift to date.
Our Response
To support strategic planning for the bicentennial campaign, the Development and Alumni Relations team commissioned Philanthropy Company to undertake two distinct but interconnected projects. These were designed to assist the Vice-Chancellor and the Director of Development and Alumni Relations in shaping campaign direction and stakeholder engagement.
Impact
Project One involved a detailed review of the existing campaign case for support. We provided recommendations to strengthen narrative clarity, donor resonance, and strategic framing.
Project Two was a high-level assessment of wider sector campaigns and Durham’s planning to date. This culminated in a presentation to the University’s external advisory board and senior campaign stakeholders, offering benchmarking insights and strategic observations to inform next steps.
