Strategic Fundraising Development for Castle Howard

Challenge
Castle Howard is one of the great Treasure Houses of England. Originally built during the 18th century, the estate has over 200 listed buildings and monuments. A continual programme of conservation, restoration and maintenance ensures that both the house and wider estate is safeguarded for future generations, while the land is managed in a sustainable and environmentally responsible way. Following the establishment of a charitable trust, Castle Howard approached Philanthropy Company for guidance in advance of setting up a fundraising function.
Response
After consulting with key stakeholders, we undertook a comprehensive review of the fundraising potential at Castle Howard. This included providing strategic advice on initial areas of focus and how best to position fundraising activity.
We delivered in-depth benchmarking research alongside a top-line analysis of the key trust and foundation prospects. The final report offered clear, actionable recommendations for establishing an effective fundraising operation and the strategies, policies and plans to put in place at the outset to increase income generation. In addition, we advised on the resources needed to support this work, including guidance on the recruitment of a senior fundraising role with a focus on major philanthropic engagement.
Impact
Our report outlined a clear roadmap for Castle Howard as it embarks on the development of a new fundraising programme. By identifying key priority areas, we have ensured that incoming staff will be well-positioned to make an immediate impact. The report also identified opportunities for early activity that can be delivered within the existing organisational structure. This strategic foundation will support Castle Howard in building fundraising capacity with confidence and a clear direction.
