Corporate Fundraising Leadership at the National Portrait Gallery

Challenge

The National Portrait Gallery (NPG) faced a challenging period during a maternity cover gap for the Head of Corporate Development. Simultaneously, the organisation was navigating significant leadership changes, including the departure of key senior staff and the appointment of an interim director. NPG was also preparing for the reopening of a major exhibition, marking one year since a capital project, and managing the high expectations surrounding the delivery of the Herbert Smith Freehills Portrait Award. The team needed steady leadership, support, and guidance to maintain momentum and meet ambitious targets.

Response

We worked closely with NPG’s Director of Development to provide flexible support over a 9 week period. Our focus was on ensuring continuity of business, stepping in to assist with account management—particularly with major supporters—and advancing special projects. We worked collaboratively with the team, offering expertise and hands-on delivery while remaining responsive to evolving needs.

Impact

  • Helped stabilise the team with coaching and support until the Head of Corporate Development’s return.
  • Worked on-site one day a week to maintain face-to-face contact with the team, with additional remote support provided.
  • Initiated a weekly Monday stand-up meeting to prioritise tasks, resolve blockers, and ensure efficient progress.
  • Ensured continued new business development by stepping in to develop proposals and deliver pitches for upcoming projects.
  • Delivered financial modeling and strategic recommendations for special projects.
  • Reviewed complex contracts.
