Exploring Philanthropic Potential: A Feasibility Study for LifeArc

14 April 2025

Challenge

LifeArc sought to explore the potential for philanthropic income to support its ground-breaking medical research, particularly in rare diseases. With a crowded charity landscape and an already robust income from other sources, the key question was whether fundraising efforts would yield sufficient returns in a reasonable timeframe. Additionally, LifeArc wanted to assess how to prepare for unsolicited donations and the implications of fundraising for a future capital project.

Response

Philanthropy Company conducted a comprehensive Philanthropic Feasibility Report to evaluate LifeArc’s fundraising potential. As part of this, we conducted a Peer Organisation Review, comparing fundraising income as a proportion of total income and return on investment across organisations, in order to provide a realistic benchmark for LifeArc’s financial targets. We carried out in-depth desk research on 32 potential funders, assessing their likelihood of giving and projected levels. Our CEO Caroline Underwood interviewed 11 senior staff members to gain insight into the internal challenges and opportunities associated with introducing a new income stream.
