Philip Lawford

Special Advisor

Philip has recently joined the Philanthropy Company as an Associate to bring his deep knowledge of the arts and giving environment to our clients.

Philip spent 20 years in investment banking, principally with UBS, where he advised a range of UK and overseas companies on capital raising, M&A, and financial restructuring; he also served as the COO of the corporate finance business of UBS and, subsequently, of ING Barings. In 2003 he joined the Linbury Trust, the grant-making foundation established by John and Anya Sainsbury (Lord and Lady Sainsbury of Preston Candover).  Linbury is known for its support for some of the UK’s pre-eminent cultural institutions; it also makes grants in a range of other fields, including social welfare, niche areas of medical research, education, and selected environmental and overseas causes.  As Director of the Trust Philip oversaw both the investment of Linbury’s endowment, and the grant-making activity which amounted, over 15 years, to in excess of £100 million.

Philip is chairman of the Steel Charitable Trust, a grant-making foundation based in Luton, and is a trustee of the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance Trust.
