Africa Day – 25th May 2021. African and Caribbean cuisine in the UK.
May is Africa Month and today is Africa Day, otherwise known as Africa Unity Day, celebrating the anniversary of the founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on this day in 1963. The day is celebrated across the continent and is observed as an official national holiday in Ghana, The Gambia, Guinea, Namibia, Zambia, Mali, Mauritania, Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
The African Union’s theme of the year this year is ‘Art, Culture & Heritage; Levers for Building the Africa we Want’. The focus being to promote African identity, shared values, the spirit of Pan-Africanism and African Renaissance and the development of the creative economy of the continent.
Philanthropy Company is proud to be working with The Africa Centre, the London based home for contemporary African culture & heritage. The Africa Centre’s mission rests upon five critical pillars: Culture, Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Social, Education and Intellectual leadership.
Food for Thought
This evening from 7:30pm, Africa Centre will explore innovation in African and Caribbean cuisine in the UK and discuss the future of Black British dining. Guest speakers include:
- William J M Chilila (Masterchef: The Professionals Finalist. Co-founder of My Chale Burger)
- Lopè Ariyo (The Observer’s 2017 rising star of African cooking and author of Hibiscus)
- Henry Omerye (Rail & Riding House Cafes)
- Amani Kiflemariam (Amatte Coffee, supporting female farmers).
