Nicky has been in the voluntary sector for 15 years. After graduating from Bristol University, Nicky started in the advertising business as an account director. Nicky took a (late) gap year and travelled from Canada down to Argentina. It was a life-changing experience, and prompted Nicky to join Save the Children as Head of Corporate Fundraising, followed by four years at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital Trust in Cape Town, South Africa, to raise funds required to build a new outpatients wing for the 300,000 outpatients each year. The outpatients’ wing was successfully completed and opened in 2000.
Nicky returned to the UK to be Director of Fundraising at WWF, the conservation organization. Increasing annual income by over 60% over a 7 year period to over £40mn in the UK, Nicky led the partnership with HSBC who gave the biggest single philanthropic donation in the UK to date. Returning as CEO to The Red Cross Children’s Hospital in 2007, she took the organization through its next phase, broadening the remit to include child health initiatives such as training courses for specialist paediatric nurses and doctors from sub Saharan Africa. Nicky then returned to the UK and she is now a consultant, working with Save the Children, FARM Africa, WaterAid, St George’s College, Windsor and with the Philanthropy Company at the International Committee for the Red Cross.
